Personality Disorder Overview

Personality disorder background

The term “personality disorder” can be used to refer to significant changes, with potentially negative consequences and of a generally adverse nature, in the personality and behavior of an individual. Though the identification of personality disorders must depend, to some extent, on subjective perceptions, the term is generally applied when people are suffering from problems due to their altered mood, and usually not until a patient has reached the ages of 16 or 17.

Personality disorder symptoms

Personality disorder symptoms can be used, in the course of a personality disorder quiz, to determine whether or not a patient has developed this kind of mental health concern. In this regard, various medical authorities have provided reference sources for this question, among which one of the most prominent is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, which is also sometimes referred to as the DSM-IV.
