Compulsion Background

A compulsion is an uncontrollable impulse, which urges an individual to act or behave in certain ways. Due to the strength and power of compulsions, an individual is often unable to ignore these impulses, regardless of whether he or she wishes to avoid the suggested behavior. There are many different types of disorder that center around compulsive behavior. These conditions can all negatively impact an individual's life.

Compulsive Liar

Compulsive lying disorder is a psychiatric disorder that occurs when an individual engages in frequent lying. Though all people lie at least once during the duration of their lives, a compulsive liar lies chronically and persistently. He/she will fabricate stories that are in no way relevant to reality or any potential outcome. Compulsive lying generally stem from low self esteem. An individual with low self esteem may attempt to appear more interesting by constructing dishonest stories, a behavior that becomes habit.

Compulsive Eating

Compulsive eating disorder is a serious condition in which an individual frequently engages in binge eating. During episodes of binge eating, an individual will consume excessive quantities of food, often until the point of feeling physically ill. In most cases, people who take part in compulsive eating are utilizing food as a coping mechanism, in order to address negative feelings, such as depression. There are many psychological and medical complications associated with this behavior.

Compulsive behavior occurs when an individual experiences the unyielding impulse to take part in behaviors or activities that he/she does not want to engage in. There are many different types of compulsive disorders that are characterized by compulsive behavior. The most well known of these conditions is obsessive compulsive disorder. Compulsive shopping, hoarding, compulsive lying, and drug addictions are also examples of compulsive disorders.

Compulsive Gambling

Compulsive gambling is a serious condition, in which an individual is not able to control his/her impulse to gamble. An individual may continue to gamble even after he/she has fallen into serious debt. An person's inability to ignore his/her compulsions may cause him/her not only to lose large amounts of money, but it may also jeopardize his/her career and his/her important relationships. If an individual is suffering from this condition, he/she should seek treatment.

Compulsive Shopping

Compulsive shopping occurs when an individual is unable to control his/her impulse to shop. It is an addiction to shopping. Individual's who are suffering from compulsive shopping frequently use shopping as a way to handle negative emotions, such as anxiety. There are a number of different warning signs associated with this condition. Compulsive shopping is a condition that should be addressed by seeking treatment or the assistance of support groups.
