List of Blood Disorders

Blood disorders can be extremely harmful to an individual's health and well being. While a blood disorder may simply result in discomfort, others are fatal. There are many different types of blood disorders, which all affect various components of the blood. The following is a list of blood disorders, including the most common conditions, as well as those frequently affecting the red bloods cells and the white blood cells:

·         On a list of blood disorders, anemia will rank one of the most common conditions, affecting millions of individual throughout the world. Anemia is a blood disorder that negatively impacts the red blood cells, causing diminished quantities of red blood cells within the blood. Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body and provide it to various organs. If the quantity of red blood cells within the blood is significantly reduced, adequate quantities of oxygen will not be transported to the organs. There are numerous potential causes of anemia, including low red blood cell production, rapid red blood cell destruction, and the loss of substantial amount of blood. There are numerous different types of anemia, many of which can be extremely detrimental to an individuals health. Some of the other common types of blood disorders include:

o    Blood Cholesterol: Large quantities of cholesterol within the arteries will cause narrowing, which will restrict the blood flow, and thereby the oxygen, reaching the lungs.

o    Hemochromatosis: A condition resulting from the absorption of excessive quantities of iron.

o    Hemophilia: A disease affecting the blood's ability to form a clot.

o    High Blood Pressure: A condition that occurs when an individual's blood pressure increases to a level that puts them at risk for a stroke, heart disease, and kidney disease.

o    Lymphatic Filariasis: A blood disorder caused by the introduction of nematode worms into the blood.

o    Polycthemia Vera: A disease characterized by an increase in blood volume, as well as the over production of blood constituents, increasing the risk of stroke and blood clots.

o    Sepsis: A bacterial infection that spreads throughout the organs, usually from an infected wound, often causing septic shock and death.

o    Sickle Cell Disease: A type of anemia resulting from the presence of abnormal hemoglobin, causing numerous health complications.

o    Thalassemia: A genetic blood disorder characterized by the presence of an unusual type of hemoglobin.

o    Thrombosis: A condition that occurs when platelets clog blood vessels while attempting to heal injuries.

·         When a condition is present on a list of blood disorders, it usually means that this disease is responsible for the destruction of red or white blood cells. When red blood cells are damaged, they are no longer able to effectively transport oxygen to the organs within the body. However, a blood disorder affecting the red blood cells may also result from the over production of these cells. Red cell aplasia is one type of condition that is often found on a list of blood disorders. Red cell aplasia occurs when the bone marrow is not able to produce red blood cells. This causes serious health complications, as eventually, the existing red blood cells will die and new ones will be needed. Hemolysis is another type of blood disorder that impacts the red blood cells, causing the breakdown of large quantities of these cells. Malaria negatively affects the red blood cells, destroying them after consuming the hemoglobin within.

·         A list of blood of blood disorders will also include a number of conditions that impact the white blood cells. The human immunodeficiency virus is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted currently afflicting the planet. Millions of individuals are currently suffering from HIV. Though most people know some information about this disease, many do not realize that HIV is a blood disorder. The virus destroys white blood cells, impairing the bodies ability to fight illness and disease. Most individual's who are affected with the virus are not killed by the virus itself, but by an illness that the body is unable to fight, due to the presence of the virus. Leukemia, a devastating type of cancer, is a blood disorder that results in the excessive accumulation of white blood cells. The conditions specified on this list of blood disorders are only the most commonly occurring diseases, however, there are many more types of blood disorders in existence.
