Drooling

Drooling is when saliva flows outside of the mouth. There are some medical conditions that cause a person to drool uncontrollably. One reason a person might be drooling is due to excess saliva which is called sialorrhea. Sialorrhea can be a result of cerebral palsy or other neurological disorders. Sialorrhea may also occur when a person is having oral health problems. This sometimes happens when a woman is pregnant, when someone has difficulty swallowing, when a person has new dentures, or when they are experiencing a withdrawal from drugs that caused a dry mouth. Some other medical reasons why a person might have excessive drool can be due to Bell’s palsy, or paralysis in the face. There are a number of different reasons why a person might be drooling, so a doctor might be needed in order to identify the cause. Depending on the cause of the excess drool a doctor would be able to provide an appropriate treatment in order to cut back on the excess saliva. The doctor would have to do a series of tests in order to determine the cause or if some sort of disease or illness is the case. While some patients may only need to take medicine others might have more severe problems and require surgery. For some people drooling may happen all day long due to sialorrhea but others may simply drool when they are sleeping. If one is drooling when they are sleeping this is not an illness, it is simply due to the fact that they are sleeping with their mouth's open. The treatment is going to be different depending on the cause and the types of drooling as well as the amount, so if drooling is a problem, contact a doctor.
