Pilates Overview

Pilates is an exercise system that has exploded in popularity over the last fifteen years, due in large part to its relative ease to learn, its great effect on physical and mental health, and the comparative lack of extreme physical exertion related to other exercises.

Pilates certiciation for Pilates training has commonly been a very imprecise and inconsistent process.  New standards and an effort by the Pilates Method Alliance is trying to change that, but certification is not universal, and right now Pilates instructors due not require licensing at either the state or federal level.

Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates was the founder of the exercise system that now bears his name.  Basing his ideas on what he learned from Yoga combined with his own observations, Pilates discovered a system that simultaneosusly used the body and mind to develop and optimize physical health, which he initially called "contrology."
