Hearing impairment refers to the partial or complete loss of the ability to be able to perceive or detect sound frequencies that can otherwise be heard by other people. Hearing impairment can be caused due to various reasons, such as congenital birth defects or trauma.

The hearing impaired have been able to use specifically designed telephones to communicate with other for a very long time. These phones will often resemble personal computers or laptops and use a text-based system that is transported through telecommunication lines. Currently, technology such as mobile phones and the internet have slowly begun to replace phones for the hearing impaired, though are still used in some cases.
