Tonsillitis Background

An infection that occurs in the tonsils is known as tonsillitis. The tonsils are thought to be part of the immune system, consisting of lymphatic tissue that is found on both sides of the throat, just behind the tongue. Infection is normally caused due to bacterial or viral agents, producing symptoms that are also commonly found in the flu and the common cold.

Tonsillitis Symptoms

Tonsillitis symptoms can often be mistaken to be the result of another illness or condition. However, through proper diagnosis, such possibilities can be ruled out in order to properly treat the infection. The most common symptom may prove to be a sore throat, though fever, headaches, body pain, and swollen lymph nodes may also be present.

White Spots on Tonsils

One of the telltale signs that tonsillitis is present is the presence of white spots on the tonsils. These are seen in the forms of white or yellowish patches that are on the swollen tonsils and will usually be used in conjunction with other symptoms to provide for the diagnosis of the infection. In some cases, doctors may choose to take a swab sample of these white spots in order to determine the nature of the infection.

Tonsil Removal

When tonsillitis becomes a chronic illness, tonsil removal may be the best course of action in treating the condition. This is known as a tonsillectomy. The procedure has been known to be thousands of years old, with records of it being conducted being dated back to even prehistoric times. The removal of tonsils is most common in young children, though it may also be recommended for adults in certain cases.

Tonsillitis in Adults

Tonsillitis is known to occur more frequently in young children, though it may also affect adults as well. Many times, adults will mistake the symptoms to be other illnesses, such as a cold or the flu, and will many not undertake the proper treatment. Because tonsillitis can dissipate on its own, many may not be aware that a tonsil infection was the root of the symptoms.

Though this should only be a preliminary measure and should still seek advice from a medical professional, it can prove to be a helpful undertaking. Pictures of tonsillitis may help individuals see the physical signs of the infection, which may show the swelling of the tonsils and the white pus-like spots that occur on them.

Chronic Tonsillitis

Often times, tonsillitis may become a consistently occurring ailment. In such a case, it is referred to as chronic tonsillitis. It is most common in young children, though it may occur in adults as well. When chronic tonsillitis is at hand, it may be recommended that the tonsils be removed in order to prevent further infections from occurring.

Tonsil Infection

A tonsil infection is usually caused from either a bacteria or a virus. The function of the tonsils will often lend for such an infection to occur, acting as a filter to trap such causative agents. Upon determining the cause of the infection, treatment may be administered appropriately. In the case that a virus is the nature of the infection, antibiotics will not be helpful in getting rid of the illness.
