Thoracic Surgery Background

Thoracic surgery refers to the specialized medical field where the surgical treatment of the organs contained in the human thorax, or the chest region, are the main focus. This will generally refer to surgeries done to the heart, lungs, diaphragm, and the esophagus.

Thoracic Surgeon

A thoracic surgeon is one that specialized in doing operations and surgical procedures on the organs within the thoracic cavity. It is a highly specialized field that is often paired or grouped with cardiac surgery, often also referred to as cardiothoracic surgery. Thoracic surgeons require extensive education and hands-on surgical training.

British Thoracic Society

The British Thoracic Society is a charity organization whose main focus is to promote health awareness and prevention of respiratory diseases and conditions. It was found in 1982 and has grown to include nearly 3000 members worldwide, consisting of medical doctors and scientists.

American Thoracic Society

The American Thoracic Society has been one of the main advocating forces in regards to respiratory illnesses and conditions, having worldwide membership nearing 18,000. It was established in 1905, and is dedicated to lowering the mortality rates that are associated with respiratory diseases by promoting research, education, and patient care.
