Astigmatism laser
surgery can correct the vision problem, by changing the curve of the cornea.
The astigmatism laser surgery is relatively safe and has included better
results than when the surgery was first introduced. There are in fact several types of astigmatism
surgeries and one of the most popular is LASIK vision correction surgery. This
type of surgery is beneficial for indivudlas that have a specific type of
astigmatism and that type is found in most people that suffer from astigmatism.
LASIK astigmatism surgery alters the shape of the
cornea, whcih results in a better refraction of light. The cornea is altered at
one of its three levels, resulting in a more appropriate curvature of the entire
cornea. When the refracted light reaches the cornea, it now results in better
vision for the patient. While most people with astigmatism will benefit from
surgery, some opt to continue using eyeglasses and contact lenses. Those that
are likely to benefit from astigmatism surgery are those that participate in
activities in which eyeglasses can be cumbersome or uncomfortable, such as
sports or jobs which require frequent movement. Those that suffer
from other eye problems, may still be good candidates for LASIK surgery.
However, certain conditions such as glaucoma, make LASIK surgery much less
beneficial for astigmatism. In addition, the cornea must meet certain
requirements, such as thickness requirements, in order for individuals to be
allowed to undergo surgery. Those that select LASIK surgery are likely to have
a good outcome, based on past results from individuals that had a astigmatism.
